Kilkee Project
We are committed to promoting and encouraging a regular interaction with the local community, and aspires to achieve real inclusion and participation in community life.
What do we provide?
This Project provides Day Supports to a small number of individuals in a community based setting in the coastal town of Kilkee. We provide support in a number of areas, mainly facilitating access and individualised supports to mainstream educational and training courses, work experience, and social and leisure activities. We respond to the needs and desires of the individuals involved by providing them with an active representation and voice within a Project Team, which regularly meets to set the priorities and direction of the support services.
When was the project established?
The Service was established in 2005 through a partnership initiative between local Community Development Agency, Eiri Corca Baiscinn, the individuals and families being supported, and the Brothers of Charity Services in Clare.
Where are we located?
We are located in the Community Centre, Kilkee, and share premises with a number of other community facilities.
Community Involvement:
A Steering Group composed of members of the local Community meets periodically to find ways of further supporting the Project to meet the needs and goals of the individuals and open new avenues towards community participation.
The Project actively encourages the involvement of volunteers from the local community, and considers their role as an invaluable resource towards establishing meaningful friendships and expanding social networks.
The members of the Project have a close working relationship with local the Community Radio Station, Radio Corca Baiscinn, and are currently involved in the production and the presenting of two radio shows. “Now We’re Talking” a fortnightly programme on disability issues, and “What’s On” a weekly programme on events happening locally.
Achievements:
The Kilkee Project won the 2007 Inclusion Ireland National Advocacy Award for its contribution to promoting self advocacy for people with intellectual disability in Ireland.
